About Learn Music Theory

A Little More About Your Instructor.

About five years ago, J. Anthony Allen (who prefers to go by “J.”) was teaching music theory at a university and also teaching composition online. After a particularly engaging lesson with a student from Kenya, something clicked: Online education is a powerful medium, and it can be used to bring resources to anyone who has the desire to learn (and an internet connection).

So J. made his first set of music theory classes, focusing on the basics. Before he had time to turn around, the classes had thousands of students, so he kept going and made more. Eventually, those courses become the genesis for the LearnMusicTheory.com website, taking students all the way through the typical American university system. Of course, with Dr. Allen’s own unique flair for humor and sarcasm.

Since then, he has made a large variety of online classes in music theory, music production, composition, film scoring, and more. His series, “Music Theory for Electronic Musicians,” has been translated into five languages and is available as a book from Amazon and other outlets.

J. is also very involved in the music industry, founding several music companies,  and actively growing his own career as a composer and producer where he has worked on films, video games, spots for Netflix and network tv, worked with major orchestras, DJ'd nightclubs, released dance music albums, and more. You can find his music on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon, and all the usual places.

J. still answers every student question while juggling his music career, and running several companies while also being a dad, husband, marathon runner, and sci-fi nerd. His secret? Coffee. Lots of coffee.

About the Learn Music Theory Programs

How long will the music theory program take?

This course includes over 98 hours of content, so if you watched it continuously, it would take you about 4 days.  I highly don’t recommend that. Instead, aiming to get through one lesson a week, by watching one video a day (on average) is a good pace. Assuming you have some time to practice the concepts, it will take you 3 or 4 months to get through all the content at that rate.

However, you will want to practice these concepts and you should feel free to re-watch anything you need to.

When I teach this material in college, it typically lasts 4 semesters, or about 2 years. That's how I learned it - over the course of 2 years, with a lot of practice and application while I was learning.

How long do I have access?

The videos on this website are on a subscription model. That means you can watch any video as many times as you like, and go at your own pace. Once you cancel the subscription, your will no longer have access to the videos. Unless, of course, you choose the “Lifetime membership.” With that membership, you just pay once and have access to all the material forever. (Or until this website disappears or the internet stops existing.)

The worksheets, PDFs, and other materials are all downloadable, and you are welcome to keep those forever, no matter what your membership is.

Do you have a refund policy?

Yes!

First, you can check it out for 10 days without paying anything.

If you don’t like the class after a month of study, I'm happy to refund your subscription cost in full. Just send me an email. After a month, we will assume you love the class and can not offer a refund.

Does this class have subtitles?

Yes!
All the videos have automatically generated English subtitles.

Can these courses be applied toward a degree?

Yes and No.
At the end of the class you will be given a certificate of completion. If you are enrolled in a college music program, you can show this certificate to your music theory professor or advisor. Sometimes those professors can be inspired to offer you a test-out exam based on your work in these classes. (I know this because I used to be one).

To be extra clear: Completing this course will not, in most cases, get you college credit. However, it might get you the ability to “test-out” of some or all music theory requirements at your university.

Can I download the videos to watch offline?

Not without some trickery. If you know internet tricks to download them, you are welcome to do so as long as you don't share them.

We do have plans of releasing a mobile app version of the program soon, and that will allow for offline viewing. So stay tuned for that.

What are the membership terms?

30-Day full refund by emailing info@learnmusictheory.com.

Cancel anytime, no questions asked.

Cancellation options can be found in your student portal after logging in.

What corporation is behind this site and content?

No corporation.

I hope you like these classes, I’ve worked really hard on them, and I'm really proud of them.
